Fotografo, ilustrador, periodista y caricaturista.
Fue el primer fotografo que realizó vistas aereas, contruyendo para ello un globo aerostatico. tambien tiene en su haber ser el primer fotografo que utilizó la luz artificial para poder fotografiar las catatumbas de Paris.
Su inicio en la fotografia se debe ala utilizacion de fotografias que le servian para realizar caricaturas de los personajes actuales de su epoca.
Sus retratos los realizaba sin ningun tipo de decoracion, basandose unicamente en los juegos de luz artificial. A pesar de no plantear su labor como retratista, se le considera un gran artista de ello por la serenidad y tranquilidad que reflejan sus retratos.
En la decada de 1870 fué nombrado comandante de una compañia de globos aerostaticos con la mision de fotografiar la posicion de los soldados prusianos que rodeaban la ciudad de Paris.
