Fotografo bostoniano que fué uno de los primeros fotografos que trabajó para la "Farm Security Administration".
Fotografió la muerte y los efectos de las guerras en Europa y Asia.
Fué capturado junto con su mujer por las tropas japonesas en Filipinas durante un año, hasta ser intercambiado como prisionero de guerra.
En Francia fotografió las mujeres francesas rapadas por la poblacion  por haber tenido relaciones con los alemanes y los efectos de la bomba nuclear en Hiroshima.
